Who runs Children's Music Academy, and how long has it been here?

Children's Music Academy of Springfield is a music school for children ages 3 to 9, at 5335 S Campbell Ave. It is owned and taught by Kelley Goodwyn, who taught here for 14 years before she bought it. Here is the studio, the people, and the families.

Kelley taught at Children's Music Academy for 14 years before she became its owner. She graduated from Missouri Southern State University in Joplin with a degree in Music and Sociology, and sang in all three of the university's choirs: chamber choir, concert chorale, and show choir. Outside the studio, Kelley homeschools and helps lead her homeschool co-op. She has graduated three of her six sons and enjoys every bit of time she gets with her family.

One parent's review on our homepage thanks her daughter's "incredible music teacher, Mrs. Goodwyn." That teacher now runs the studio, and still teaches in it.

“Our daughter has grown tremendously these past 3 years through CMA's incredible music program, and her incredible music teacher, Mrs. Goodwyn! This music program is truly phenomenal.”

We teach music to young children in a warm, positive, affirming room, and we want children to enjoy music. Classes are built to catch a child's interest and imagination through games and activities that fit the age. In our small group setting a child has a teacher who cares for and encourages them, and classmates who make the learning social.

The children are already having a blast. Then add a parent, or often a grandparent, who comes to class and takes part. You learn the same skills as your child, and you get a musical date with your child every week. Nothing for you to plan. Show up and enjoy learning music together.

Behind all the fun, there is some serious learning going on. We are a class rather than a single focus private piano, voice or guitar lesson. The curriculum teaches piano and keyboard, singing, theory, ear training, composition, ensemble playing, guitar, recorder and a range of percussion instruments, over a multiyear course that ends in a graduation ceremony.

The families

Some of our families have been coming for more than a decade. One mother of five CMA graduates wrote that she drove two hours each way, with three children in classes on the same day at one point, "and it has been worth every penny and every mile and every long day." Google shows 5.0 stars across 68 reviews for the studio, written by Springfield parents over ten years.

“I have been bringing our children to CMA for over 11 years now. We drive 2 hours to get there, and it has been worth every penny and every mile and every long day. The teachers are so loving and caring. I would do whatever it takes to get my children to CMA.”

Where the curriculum comes from

Children's Music Academy of Springfield teaches the Children's Music Academy curriculum, written by Jan Cross and taught in studios across the country since the 1980s. It was written on one idea: children should begin music early, in the preschool and kindergarten years, when they absorb it the way they absorb language. Everything in our classroom comes from that.

The teachers

Every teacher at CMA teaches the same curriculum and the same way. Meet them, and see who will be in the room with your child.
